There are many versions of songs that I like the cover of better than the original.  Is this sacriligious?  Or does it have something to do with my absolute love of cover songs?  I mean, I could be at any show in the world, and if any band plays any song that is not originally theirs, I will likely go nuts.

So here’s a list of covers I like better than the original (also note, you must have heard the original in order to like the cover better.  Obvious right?  Well, when I was out at college in Ithaca some loser at the paper wrote an article about how Rusted Root had covered Jimi Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” at a concert on campus the night before.  Needless to say, I raged and wrote a strongly worded letter to the editor.  Which I think is still online if you google my name).

ANYWAY:

Phish’s “Loving Cup” always beats The Stones version.

Further, Phish’s “Cities” is on my iPod, while the Talking Heads version is not.  Nor will it ever be.

I dig me some John Prine, but “Angel From Montgomery” will always belong to Dave Matthews in my mind.

Now, this might be really bad–I love Joaquin Phoenix’s “Cry, Cry, Cry” way better than J.R. Cash’s.

And some songs whose covers absolutely blow dogs:

“A” for effort Eric Clapton, but “I Shot the Sheriff” belongs not in the hands of a Brit, but in the hands of a black dreadlocked man named Bob Marley

The Counting Crows absolutely ruined Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.”

The Byrd’s “My Back Pages” isn’t really that bad but it’s hard to outdo Bobby D on this one…

Are there any cover songs you like better than the originals?

Quote of the Day: “It took a world of trouble, it took a world of tears, yeah it took a long time to get back here.” –Tom Petty

Bonus quote since we’re talking music: “She comes back to tell me she’s gone,
As if I didn’t know that, as if I didn’t know my own bed, as if I’d never noticed, the way she brushed her hair from her forehead, and she said losing love is like a window in your heart, Everybody sees you’re blown apart, Everybody sees the wind blow.” –Paul Simon

Trivia is just another form of random shit, so you know I love it.  Useless knowledge can help you impress people, or win shots at a bar.  It’s win-win all around.  So try your hand at these questions… NO GOOGLING!!!  I’ll post the answers in the comments section later today…

1) What name is given to half a Byte (4 bits)?

2) Who the fahck is Casimir Pulaski? (Bonus points if you know AND don’t live in Illinois.  Because I live in Illinois and have NO IDEA why yesterday was a holiday)

3) What was the longest movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture?

4) What was the name of Archie and the Gang’s principal?

5) How many times does the word “girl” appear in the Bible?

Reflecting on 2009

Warning: array_key_exists() expects parameter 2 to be array, boolean given in /home1/es7400/public_html/wp-content/plugins/reaction-buttons/reaction_buttons.php on line 54

As 2009 (and the decade!) comes to an end, I thought it would be nice  to reflect on the past year considering I’m a huge fan of “end-of-the-year” lists! I’m not a fan of personal info on my blog but I think the following is pretty benign. Also, 2008 was such a horrible year, that I was determined to make 2009 awesome. I think I succeeded… Here are some month-by-month highlights (consider this my supremely annoying Christmas card!):

January

  • Quit my job
  • Turned 26 (sayonara quarter century!)
  • Went to Madrid with my BFF

February

  • Enjoyed living the unemployed dream before it got boring and tedious

March

  • Started my awesome blog!
  • Went to Arizona for Cubs Spring Training, baked in the sun for what I would later find out would be the last time I could do that. Thanks for the tan Arizona!

April

  • Another exciting Cubs season began…

May

  • As quick as the Cubs season began… it was already over.
  • I learned the value of couponing thanks to all the frugal blogs out there on the information super highway! Not sure how much I saved but if my CVS receipts are any indicator, my year-to-date savings there alone is over $800!

June

  • Went to Las Vegas for the first and last time
  • Went to my first Cubs-White Sox game on the scary southside

July

  • Can’t remember much about this… I can only assume this means that I went on the traditional midyear/midsummer bender

August

  • Started grad school!

September

  • Reunited with my long lost lover and became engaged!
  • Went to Seattle with my family for an awesome Bears-Seahawks game

October

  • Formed a legendary karaoke band, “Annette”

November

  • My long lost lover moved in and I said goodbye to my beloved single life forever

December

  • This  month flew by, I have no idea what happened in December besides Christmas and going to Pittsburgh with my Dad for an awesome Steelers game!

So that, in a nutshell, has been my year. I look forward to making 2010 even more awesome, if that’s possible. Thank you also to all of you, my readers, for making my blog and my year worthwhile! Have a fabulous New Years, be safe, and I’ll see you again in 2010!

Happy Friday the 13th!!  I absolutely LOVE Friday the 13ths!!!

Dave and Chesney from the CMA Awards… the two greatest people to ever share a stage.  I can’t decide who I love more:
