While I am and always will be a city girl, I must admit that I am envious of the suburbs for one reason: chain restaurants.  Olive Garden, Applebees, Chili’s, andog various “steakhouses” are what my dreams are made of.  I see ads for these on T.V. all the time and while I am curious as to why they are shown in the city, I can’t help but be tempted.  Endless breadsticks and salad?  A Southwestern Sampler platter for $3.99?  All pipe dreams in the city.

If these ads are shown as some sort of marketing ploy to make me long for a world of subdivisions, they are working.  People flock to the city to experience destination restaurants such as Schwa, Moto, & Alinea.  But if I knew where any of the suburbs actually were or how to get to them, I would glady sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic to taste the delicacies known as “Bloomin’ Onion Rings” or “Aussie Cheese Fries.”  And why make a reservation trthat requires you to dole out your credit card number when you can just walk up to a chain restuarant and be given a “pager” that will light up and buzz when your table is ready?  In the meantime, you can wait at the bar, sip on a “Roadhouse Roadie Margarita,” and throw peanut shells on the floor!  How could dining get any better than this?!

So while I can eat my menu at Moto or hope Schwa will finally answer their phone to take my reservation, the real excitement always lies in the unknown, which for me is chain restaurants sprawled one after the other on the main drag of any given suburb.  Foodies probably hate me.
