Since I work for myself, I’m taking the day off because yesterday was such a shit’s piece.

But I will give you this one tip:  If you lose your phone and call T-Mobile to ask them if any recent calls have been made and they say no but suggest you suspend the phone immediately, DO IT.  Do not wait all day and continue to call the phone in hopes of someone picking it up.  Do not foolishly believe in the goodness of people because the next thing you know you’ll be footing the bill for a 30 minute international phone call to Mexico.

Quote of the Day: “I started out on burgundy but soon hit the harder stuff – Everybody said they’d stand behind me when the game got rough – but the joke was on me there was nobody even there to call my bluff – I’m going back to New York City, I do believe I’ve had enough” -Mr. Bob Dylan

Perhaps it is because I was just in sunny Arizona that I don’t mind the snow we had yesterday.  Or, maybe it’s because I’ve lived in Chicago for 26 years and have come to welcome any sort of weather at any given time.  They say if you don’t like the weather in Chicago, wait a minute.  Or something like that.  So I wonder why people are so outraged that we had a snowfall when it’s almost April.  If you just moved here, fine, you are excused.  But if you have lived here for at least a year you should know how it goes.  If you don’t like seasons, move somewhere that doesn’t have them.

I love Chicago and its weather.  I like the possibility of a 70 degree day in December or a snow-filled spring day.  The sheer anomaly of such days is what makes this an exciting place to live.  Just when you think the weather has turned, Mother Nature lets you know she’s still in charge.  It’s like, just when you think we have finally been absolved of public corruption, my boy Patrick Fitzgerald indicts someone else.

So my point is, Chicago keeps us on our toes.  I personally enjoy the unknowing.  I love the snowy days as much as I enjoy the sunny ones.  And while I would love to be basking in the sun right now, I know those days will be here someday and I will have to patiently wait, thus making them all the more sunnier.  I never swap out my winter clothes for my summer clothes before May.  If you have hopes of doing so, perhaps Chicago and its senseless seasons are not for you.

Last weekend I was lucky enough to be asked by Shanky and her mom to go to a concert at the Old Town School of Folk Music.  We saw Dave Alvin, who I wasn’t that familiar with (more on his awesomeness in a future post…)

The show was at their North Lincoln location, and as I stood outside waiting for Shanky, people were streaming in as if Mick Jagger were headlining.  Granted, said people made me feel super young, but once inside it was a fairly good age-mix of people.

The theater itself is quite larger than I expected– there is a main floor and a balcony.  In the back of the main floor are these little club type tables and chairs which is where we sat.  That was one of my favorite parts and when I go again I will try to get those seats.  There are some tables and chairs in the front right next to the stage (which had ample room for Dave and all his “Guilty Women”), but that’s a little too high profile for me. old-town

Beer, wine, and other refreshments are available throughout the show for 4 or 5 bucks.  It was a great way to spend an evening — see a show at Old Town and have dinner before or after at any of my favorite restaurants on Lincoln (Bistro Campagne, http://www.bistrocampagne.com/, which I am no longer protesting, or Bocca Della Verita, http://laboccachicago.com/default.aspx).

Before the show, a guy from Old Town came out and gave a little speech thanking the audience for their continued support, etc.  Despite tough economic times, he said there were about 7,000 students enrolled.  If a class isn’t your thing, catching a show there is a fun way to support a great place!  Here is the upcoming schedule for April: http://www.oldtownschool.org/concerts/2009/4/

On a related note, each summer Old Town puts on the Folk & Roots Festival in Welles Park.  I have been several times and it is always a groovy way to catch a band you wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to.  Also, my favorite incense guy has a booth there and I just have not been able to find the same quality incense elsewhere in the city.  So, go for the music, the incense, or both!  http://www.chicagofolkandroots.org/

Yay, I’m back!  And tan!  If you missed me even half as much as Klinker missed me then we’re in good shape 🙂

Luckily it’s Random Shit Friday’s so I don’t have to get totally back in the swing of things right away, since I got in kinda late last night.

Now, would you classify this jam as country?

And don’t forget– TONIGHT = Elbo Room for Dan Tedesco and the Long Haul!  10ish.  Be there!  I can regale you with stories of some of the awesomest cab drivers west of the Mississippi!

Hello all!

Since I am taking a few days off for a little R & R, I thought it would be a good opportunity to get your thoughts.  I’ve been at this about a week now and am wondering what everyone thinks of the blog thus far.  Likes, dislikes?  Things that you think are awesome, or maybe not so much?  Stuff you want to see more of, less of?  Please feel free to give me some feedback as you are the ones I do this all for!!!  Since this is just the beginning pros as well as cons are certainly appreciated!

And, I would also like to thank everyone for their interest so far.  It has been fun as well as challenging figuring out all this crazy computer stuff, but I very much enjoy it and am glad others do as well.

Thanks in advance for your input… you’ll be hearing from me again on Friday.  Get ready.
